You start as a caveman with a wooden club and a dream. The enemy base is just a few hundred pixels away, and the only thing between you and victory is a steady stream of angry stick-wielding dudes. Age of War keeps that core tension for its entire runtime, but the game transforms as you earn XP and gold. Kill enough enemies and you'll unlock new ages—medieval knights, musketmen, tanks, and eventually laser-firing mechs. The unit variety is laughably unbalanced in the best way, and figuring out which unit crushes which is half the fun. The money game is where it gets interesting. You can spam cheap clubmen for early pressure, or save for a single heavy unit that steamrolls through three waves. I kept losing until I realized the special attack—a meteor strike or turret barrage—can break a stalemate instantly. Timing it right when the enemy pushes close to your base feels amazing, like flipping the table in a board game you were losing. The difficulty curve isn't gentle. Enemy AI will punish you for hoarding cash or ignoring defense upgrades. But that's why the age system works: every defeat teaches you a new unit synergy, and you'll come back with a better plan. It's the kind of game you can lose at for an hour and still want one more run.
