CheckersHD keeps the rules honest: 12 pieces each, dark squares only, diagonal movement, forced captures, and kings once you hit the back row. If you've played checkers on a picnic table, you already know the drill—but the HD coat makes every slide and jump feel crisp. What surprised me is how quickly the AI punishes lazy play. The real tension comes from forced captures. You'll spot a tempting jump, only to realize grabbing it leaves a double-jump open for the computer. I kept getting baited into little diagonal ambushes where my own capture set up three of my pieces disappearing in one turn. Once a piece gets crowned, the board opens up; kings move backward and suddenly every stale edge position becomes a launchpad. The interface is clean—no clutter, just the board and your pieces. Click or tap to select, then click the highlighted square. There's no undo, so each click feels weighted. For a quick break, it's perfect; for a longer session, the AI scales enough to keep you honest. My only gripe is that the same forced-capture rule I love also costs me kings when I forget they can be taken backward.
