Ratatron doesn't care about your comfortable gaming habits. It hands you a twitchy little robot rodent, splits the screen into left and right zones, and dares you to keep it alive. Click the left side or hit the left arrow and the rat jerks that way; click right and it veers the other way. That's the entire control scheme, and it's exactly enough. The real tension comes from the obstacles. Anything that isn't the floor is probably lethal—moving walls, spinning blades, sudden drop-offs. I found myself leaning in real close, clicking furiously like a lab mouse pressing a lever for treats. There's a rhythm to it eventually, a kind of beat you settle into once you stop panicking, but the game is very good at breaking that rhythm with a surprise pattern. Each run ends with a score screen that feels less like failure and more like a dare to try just one more time. It won't win awards for storytelling, but as a pure reflex toy it's dangerously easy to lose ten minutes to. The simple visual style keeps the focus on movement, and the absence of any tutorial feels almost refreshing—you figure out the rules by dying a few times, which only takes about five seconds.
